HELLO, WEB FRIENDS!!!
POSTAL SERVICE'S *GIVE UP* GOES GOLD; EXCLUSIVE REMIX OF *BE STILL MY HEART* AVAILABLE ON ITUNES; HOT HOT HEAT'S GOT HEAPING HELPINGS OF GOODNESS ON THEIR PLATE...
Mr. John Henkel of the RIAA spoke with our Esteemed Director of National Sales, Mr. Andy K, and let us know that sales of The Postal Service's Give Up have indeed surpassed 500,000. That means Give Up has gone GOLD, and it's only the second record in the Sub Pop catalog to do so (the other's Nirvana's Bleach, which has since gone platinum.) This is a big fucken deal, and we're all amped. After all, it was Sir Elton John who, during the launch of the RIAA Diamond Award in '99, said, and I quote, "I think this is the biggest accolade you can be given because it means your fans have gone out and bought your records. And that's why we make records--for our public."
Of course, that sounds totally pompous, and Ben & Jimmy had no fucken idea they'd ever sell so many records (this is just a fun side-project, dudes!) nor that they'd gain so much airplay with their Jared Hess (Napoleon Dynamite)-directed video for their newest single, "We Will Become Silhouettes". That single, by the way, was #2 on the Billboard Singles Charts last week--and only because Destiny's Child beat them out for the #1 slot by 55 pieces. The band's video is viewable all over the web, at tons of major regional video shows, on FUZE.TV and on MTV2's Subterranean. We here at the Sub Pop don't usually toot our own pompous horns, but this is sweet.
You know what else is killer? Postal Service now has an iTunes exclusive that you can download at www.itunes.com--it's a hott remix of "Be Still My Heart", the Postal Service's newest jam, by renowned beatmaster Nobody, who re-hashes stuffs for Prefuse 73, and has a new full-length out on Ubiquity Records called Pacific Drift: Western Water Music Vol. 1 that kills. It's just a buck. What a deal, eh? In the immortal words of Ali G, "Me loves techmology". But I digress.
In other news, our pals Hot Hot Heat (now on Warner Brothers, but they used to be with us!) are about to go on tour! Look!

SUB POP'S 2005 SXSW SHOWCASE & THE CHUNKLET PARTY: IF YOU DON'T GO, YOU ARE A TOTAL CHOOCH
....or maybe it just means that you're not in Austin, TX for this year's booze-drenched annual South by Southwest music fest. As a native Houstonian, might I suggest that you sample some delicious breakfast burritos from Tamale House #3 (the best of all the Tamale Houses) or, perhaps, a tasty plate of cheese enchiladas from Chuy's? Either will certainly grease you up right for our showcase:
SUB POP SXSW 2005 SHOWCASE:
Wed., March 16th at Emo's (in the main room.)
9:00--Jennifer Gentle
10:00--A-Frames
11:00--The Thermals
12:00--The Album Leaf
1:00--Sleater-Kinney
Might I also suggest that you wash our awesome showcase down with a tall, cool bottle of Lone Star beer? It's the national beer of Texas. Yes, I said national.
You should also check out Professor Henry Owings' great Chunklet Party! It's at the Church of the Friendly Ghost on March 18th, and Jennifer Gentle is playing! Look at this great flier for details:

SUB POP SELLS SEA SHELLS BY THE SEA SHORE
You wonder what our ugly mugs look like? Well, here we are in all our glory, after attending a six hour-long marketing meeting where we planned a certain kind of world domination designed to catapult our label's laser-like voltron vision into the future and beyond. We even talked about manufacturing a whole line of promotional Iron and Wine ceramic thimbles ('cause that's what's on the cover of Woman King, get it?) for about 2.5 seconds, until we realized that was stupid, just like that time we made promotional Chixdiggit fingernail clippers. Instead, we're just gonna, y'know, keep putting out records.(True story.)
WE ARE WAY WORLDWIDE
I don't know how often you check our tours page, but I'll bet you top dollar that folks in Brazil, Croatia and New Zealand will be visiting us a touch more often! Why, you ask? Because we've got bands touring in all three countries. Since you have tons of vacation hours left this quarter AND I heard you don't give a fuck about your job at the Piggy Patty Packing Plant anyways, may I suggest some striking travel packages for you, the adventurous Sub Pop Fan?
GO SEE THE SHINS IN NEW ZEALAND THIS FEBRUARY--AND HIT UP THE HONOKUI MOONSHINER'S FESTIVAL.
We all know The Shins love moonshine, and we also know that you love The Shins. Perfect, no? This festival, which takes place on February 26th, involves the serving of delicious venison and haggis. The New Zealand travel authority's website also says that "Three members of Australia's premier bush comedy act, The Naked Bush Poets will be here, they are sure to entertain patrons with their hilarious repertoire." Bush, booze & Shins--all on the other side of the planet??? COUNT ME IN, DUDES!
GO SEE WOLF EYES THIS MAY IN SAO PAOLO, BRAZIL--AND VISIT INSTITUTO BUTANO, ONE OF THE WORLD'S LARGEST SNAKE FARMS!
According to Travelocity, Sao Paolo, the largest city in South America, is "like five New Yorks." I am totally in. Plus, I'm not sure if any Sub Pop bands have ever played Brazil before.
GO SEE THE THERMALS DOMINATE CROATIA, AND THEN VISIT THE ELAPHITES DEER ISLANDS!
Between the Eastern tip of Mljet and the ancient town of Dubrovnik, there are tiny islands that used to teem with deer. Strangely enough, says a tourist site, "Today, there are no signs of deer, literal or metaphorical and only three of the islands - Sipan, Lopud and Kolocep - are inhabited." That means you and The Thermals totally get an island ALL TO YOURSELVES!
